Hometown Pride: Rocky and More

Ever have that moment where you’re watching a movie and then suddenly you recognize a storefront, a street corner or a monument? If you’ve ever seen Rocky, I’m sure you immediately recognized the infamous steps out front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In fact, there is now even a statue to remind Philadelphia and its many tourists of this moment.

While Rocky might be the most well known Philadelphia-based movie, our hometown is the backdrop to many other memorable on-screen moments. Here are a few that you may not have noticed.

Silver Linings Playbook

This movie opens with a quick overview of the Philadelphia skyline and is filled to the brim with Eagles references, but with a closer look, there are even more recognizable locations. Take a stroll down jeweler’s row or hit up the Llanerch Diner for some raison bran and tea.

The Sixth Sense

Ever walked down Walnut Street and noticed a striking similarity between the restaurant Butcher Singer on 15th Street and the Striped Bass restaurant where Crowe meets his wife? Me neither, but now that I know, it’s hard to miss.

World War Z

If only Philadelphia were the home of Brad Pitt! In World War Z, it is. Watch this movie to catch a glimpse of Philadelphia in a manner you’ve never seen it before!

As Philadelphians we are lucky to have such a recognizable hometown. Next time you watch these movies, keep your eyes open to all of the clues sitting in the background. It is exciting to walk in the footsteps of these actors and actesses, and it is even more exciting to know that our hometown is worthy of such recognition.
