Maintaining a Good Online Presence

Social media is everywhere, and most of us take part in it to some extent. It is important to keep up your online presence so that when opportunities arise your current and future employers are impressed with what they see.

Everyone can see what you post online, nothing is private and nothing can completely erased once it is posted. For this reason, it is essential that we think before posting so that later in life we don’t have to worry about missing out on an opportunity because of a past spur-of-the-moment post.

Watch what you say. Posting about a frustrating day at school or work may seem like a good way to vent in the moment, but these posts can reflect on you later on. Watch your wording to avoid offending anyone and try to avoid cursing.

Don’t post photos if you aren’t comfortable with everyone seeing them. If a friend posts something you prefer not to be public, you can ask them to remove the photo or report it to the social media site to be removed. On Facebook, there are settings that require you to approve any post or picture that you are tagged in before it shows up on your page.

Search yourself. Do a Google search of your name; you may be surprised what results show up! Scroll through these and check out what others can see if they do the same search.
